Rick Altig, State General Agent, joined American Income Life Insurance Company when he was only 21 years old. He had graduated from Oregon State University with a degree in political science and needed to earn money before attending law school. His dad’s agency represented American Income Life, and he suggested Rick join the team.
Recalls Rick, “I started as an Agent and became a General Agent while becoming one of the top Public Relations people in AIL. I earned a promotion to Master General Agent and then another to State General Agent when I was only 23 years old. I opened the first Canadian office in American Income Life, and I was the first SGA whose agency produced 25 million dollars in one year. Rick has shared his talent with AIL for 29 years.
Like many associated with American Income Life, Rick finds, “the most rewarding part of working with AIL is helping in the personal and professional development of others. The experience you gain at AIL is something unique and can be used in all aspects of your career and life. It’s not get rich quick; it’s get rich for sure. If I knew from the beginning that it would pay this well, I would have worked even harder.”
When did Rick know for certain that law school would have to wait? “I sold a program to a young 21-year-old couple,” recalls Rick. “A week later I got a call from the wife letting me know her husband had passed away. She was calling to collect on his $1,000 policy. But after checking the paperwork, I was able to inform her that he didn’t have a $1,000 policy; he had a $100,000 policy. That’s when I knew this career was first and foremost about helping working families.”
Rick is a family man, both at home and on the job. He says, “I love to spend time with my wife and four children, as well as my professional Altig family. I’m always trying to do more for others than what I would have them do for me.”
That attitude carries over to Rick’s charitable endeavors. He says, “Yes, giving is the best part of life, and we give a major part of our income to community based organizations that help those in need.”
“I knew from day one that this opportunity was exactly what I was looking for, and that I could be a success in this business,” says Ilija Orlovic, SGA Partner in the Altig-Orlovic Agency.
Formerly a retail manager, Ilija has had tremendous success since joining American Income Life in May 1996. After only seven months with AIL, he was appointed Master General Agent in January 1997. Two years later, Ilija was promoted to Regional General Agent.
In 2003, Ilija made the move to the United States as a State General Agent partner with Rick Altig.
“The opportunity to grow my own organization as big as I could imagine and to train new leaders in the business enticed me to join AIL,” says Ilija. Training new leaders in the organization and watching them develop into top leaders at AIL has been the most rewarding part of his job.
What advice does Ilija give to others thinking about joining American Income Life? “It is the best opportunity in North America. No other company does what AIL does for Agents in terms of compensation and support. Also, no other company in North America does what American Income Life does in terms of protecting families. Everyone needs our product. There is no person who is exempt from the need for the products we provide. We are there to provide protection and hope to families when they need it most. AIL is Opportunity Unlimited in every sense and will allow you to build the business you’ve always dreamed of.”
When not working, Ilija enjoys spending quality time with his family, traveling, and watching his children compete in sports. He also believes in giving back and contributes a substantial amount of his income to charitable organizations.
While studying at Kent State University in Ohio, Nicholas Lorence also worked as a bartender. After receiving his Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration in 2006, he was ready to take on a new venture. In 2008, he found what he was looking for with American Income Life Insurance Company (AIL).
“I was a personal recruit,” recalls Nick. “Growing up in Cleveland, everyone has a clock-in and clock-out job. Some were landscapers, pouring concrete, and my father was a truck driver. I knew I didn’t want to do anything like that. So when my friends, who worked for AIL, told me about this opportunity, I jumped at it,” he says. “I was promoted to Master General Agent in four-and-a-half months and moved to run a new office in Provo, Utah. I trained and developed five Million Dollar Lifetime Producers and two Two Million Dollar Lifetime Producers. At one point in my career, I was in charge of 11 different offices. After only two years with the Company, I was selected to serve on the AO Board of Directors for the first time. I have led AO in growth as a Regional General Agent and Master General Agent. But the most rewarding aspect of joining American Income Life is watching people I work with grow to be even more successful than me. AIL is about changing people’s lives. One of the most successful Agents in the Company originally came to our office hoping to make $8 an hour. Now he is living out his dream,” emphasizes Nick.
What’s Nick’s advice to anyone thinking about joining the AIL family? “Be genuine, be positive, put people first, work hard, and do it the right way. Everything else will follow,” he stresses. “In addition, invest all your time, energy, attitude, and effort into this career from the beginning. What’s unique about our business is everything is already in place for you. You just have to go out and do it,” he says. “Just don’t give up at the beginning. I made mistakes when I started my career, but everything I did led me here. Without those I would not have learned all that I did,” Nick adds.
Nick has witnessed the value of American Income Life products many times over. “I’ve been around a long time, so I’ve seen a lot of death claims. It hurts tremendously, but it still amazes me how we help the family. So many families we care for don’t have extra income, but we take care of them. Families losing a breadwinner are protected because of us. The biggest thing for me is when a family is insured
with AIL and something happens, they have cash. When they are injured and can’t work, they have cash. When someone dies, the funeral is taken care of, the paychecks keep coming in, and they don’t lose their home,” he points out.
Nick sees his Agency as a leader in terms of career opportunities and economic impact in his area. “We offer growth, promotions, a dynamic culture, and a family atmosphere. We have a people-first mentality and live by the ‘Platinum Rule’ of doing more for others than they would do for you,” he says. “With outstanding training, we give opportunities to people to make more money than they have ever made. Our associates have the chance to grow themselves personally, professionally, and financially, all while helping others. That is a win-win for everyone,” he adds.
Nick’s major interest outside of work is sports. “I am a huge sports fan. I played baseball and soccer growing up. Now I root for every professional Cleveland team and Ohio State University team. I love to play poker, and I love to golf. Right now, my biggest hobby is teaching my kids to do everything,” he admits.
Nick is definitely a family man. “My family loves to travel, and we’ve been to places like France and Italy. My mother is one-hundred- percent Italian, and I love to cook. I grew up watching my grandfather cook, and he is my role model. We always have done big family dinners on Sunday,” he adds.
Giving back is also a priority for Nick. “We had complications with our first pregnancy,” he recalls, “and we spent a lot of time in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). We love to donate to the local hospital, the local NICU, and Children’s Hospital. That is really close to our heart,” Nick says.
